Sunna Thorkelsdottir (a.k.a. Sunes) is a primarily self-taught artist, currently working out of a shared studio space in the Tannery Arts Center in Santa Cruz, California. She works in multiple mediums, with a current focus on gouache, oils, printmaking, and textile/fiber arts. Her work is inspired by nature, geometry, the human figure, and social justice. She also draws on her personal experience with narcolepsy and cataplexy. Many of her paintings feature brushwork inspired by her many years as a face painter in Santa Barbara, while her text-based prints and murals draw on her love of typography, calligraphy, and sign-painting.
Through her work, she aims to explore, acknowledge, process, and uplift.
